World Cup tickets are not the only thing with high prices as host cities like Seattle may give fans a bit of sticker shock with the cost for rooms. This has prompted fans to wonder whether it is better to stay at an Airbnb or hotel when in Seattle during the World Cup.
The answer depends on your goal for your World Cup trip. Having lived in Seattle, I am here to offer you some honest advice from someone who knows (and loves) the city before you book your trip.
Fans can expect downtown Seattle hotels to start at $500 to $600 per night during the World Cup, with many premium places topping $1,000 nightly.
Here’s what you need to know about where to stay in Seattle during the World Cup.
1. Seattle Hotels Will Give You the Closest Proximity to Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field) During the World Cup
For those willing to pay a premium, many hotels in downtown Seattle are in walking distance (if you are willing to walk 30 minutes or less) to Seattle Stadium (what FIFA is calling Lumen Field during the World Cup). There are also bus lines around downtown Seattle that will drop fans off close to the stadium.
There are some Airbnb options in downtown Seattle and Pioneer Square, but the majority of available places are outside of this area. If your goal is to be close to the stadium and fan fest area, staying at a Seattle hotel may be your preferred option.
Our favorite Seattle hotel is The Edgewater, a stunning place located directly on the waterfront. This will come with a $1,100 nightly rate (with some nights during the World Cup even higher) and require a minimum three-night stay.
Two hotels that still have premium pricing but are a bit cheaper than other downtown Seattle hotels are Hyatt at Olive 8 and Hyatt Regency Seattle.
2. Seattle Airbnbs Offers Cheaper Options Than Hotels, Often With More Space
One of the beautiful things about Seattle is it is a city of neighborhoods. This means that staying at an Airbnb does not necessarily mean you will be outside the city next to random strip malls alongside Applebee’s.
If you are looking for some of the cooler neighborhoods in Seattle, Capitol Hill, Ballard, Greenlake, Fremont, Columbia City, West Seattle/Alki Beach are among the top options. We’ve highlighted a few of the top Airbnbs in the above links.
One of my favorite things to do in Seattle is to take the ferry to one of the nearby islands. Places like Vashon Island and Bainbridge Island give people a smaller feel inside the Pacific Northwest, and an especially good option for fans who prefer being in nature more than in a city.
Vashon and Bainbridge are noticeably cheaper than Seattle itself during the World Cup. The only challenge is that you will need to rely on the ferry schedule to get into Seattle. There are not really rideshare options once you get to the island.
It is not as scary as it seems as people commute for work every day. The ferry ride itself is beautiful and offers drinks and food onboard. Just be sure to check the ferry schedule for the days you will be in Seattle.
Staying inside Seattle in one of the neighborhoods will still be a quick bus ride or rideshare trek to the stadium for the World Cup. You get to save money while experiencing how Seattle locals live. Just be sure to read the reviews and avoid staying in an Airbnb with no reviews.
3. The Cheapest Way to Stay in Seattle During the World Cup Is To Be Outside the City
Whether it is a hotel or Airbnb, the cheapest option for your Seattle trip during the World Cup is likely to stay outside the city. Eastside suburbs like Woodinville and Kirkland are offering more affordable options during the World Cup. This is true for both Airbnbs and hotels.
Woodinville offers a number of wineries and distilleries, while many Kirkland places are near the water. North of Seattle there are affordable options in Shoreline and Edmonds (a hidden gem) as well.
While technically these areas are the Seattle suburbs, each neighborhood still has plenty of places to enjoy during the World Cup.
4. Airbnb vs. Hotel: Where Should You Stay in Seattle During the World Cup?
You probably landed on this page hoping someone could make a decision for you regarding your upcoming trip to Seattle. Unfortunately, there is not one right answer on whether staying in a hotel or Airbnb is “better” during the World Cup.
There are practical answers depending on what you are prioritizing during your trip. If your biggest priority is to be near Seattle Stadium and the World Cup fan fest, staying at a downtown hotel is your best option. Just be prepared to pay a premium during your World Cup trip.
Airbnbs are a better option for your Seattle stay if your goals include saving money and having more space. Wherever you stay in Seattle, it is sure to be an epic World Cup trip.
